Canada Cup West 2023

WHAT IS A REGATTA?

WHAT IS A REGATTA? A regatta is a full day of competitive races held rain or shine. Races usually begin around 8:00 a.m. and finish about 6:00 p.m. or possibly later if there are delays due to thunderstorms or other unforeseen events. Most paddlers will compete in anywhere from 5 – 8 races over the course of the day, usually against others their own age, with lots of other races to watch in-between! Races can be singles (K-1 or C-1), team boats (K-2 or K-4, C-2 or C-4), or even war canoe (also known as C-15).

WHY PARTICIPATE IN A REGATTA?

Although regattas are a full-day commitment (typically 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.), they are a fun and social time for paddlers and their families. It gives the paddlers a chance to measure themselves against other paddlers and gives daily training a real purpose.

COMPETITION AGE CATEGORIES

Canoe-Kayak Canada age categories for a paddler are based on their actual age as of January 1st of the year of competition. The “U” means under (or less than) that age. U12, U14, U16, U18, U23 (Junior), Senior: 18+ depending on points, Masters: age 35+

NEW & RETURNING ATHLETES AND PARENTS

For new parents who are going for the first time to the competition, please make sure you bring your own folding chairs and cooler to store your food, drinks for your kids. Around our hotel, there are lots of stores to buy food at. We are staying at the venue for the whole day during the races so please make sure you bring enough drinks, fluids and maintaining good hydration in competition is extremely important.

Don’t forget your water bottles. Sports drinks may be useful as they not only provide fluid but also have the additional benefit of carbohydrates for improved fuel or mental drive.
A good way to check hydration levels is to monitor urine color and aim for a pale “straw” color most of the day.
